Program details
You are trying to do the right thing for the environment. The facts back you up! People should be supportive of your efforts, but they say “NO – NOT IN MY BACKYARD.” We’ve done some research with psychologists and there is something more behind the NOT in NIMBY. We will share the underlying reasons why people say NO and how to break through to understanding so that you can deter and resolve conflict and community consensus can be reached.

Speaker Bio
Sheila Shockey, founder and president of Shockey Consulting Services, LLC, has worked as a government staff member and a consultant since 1989. Sheila brings the perspective of having worked in a government agency, a deep understanding of the technical and planning issues and the ability to translate that information effectively to all stakeholders. When she is not talking about her kids Ali and Jack, she is talking about sports, politics and sewers. She loves helping ordinary citizens understand the complexities of public policy decisions, especially for environmental programs. Sheila holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from Washburn University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from University of Missouri – Kansas City. Her college professor told her she would have a great career if she stayed away from sewers, trash and animal control. Luckily, she didn’t take that advice.
