SUMMARY:Jan Monthly Meeting - Wetland\, Archeological\, and Habitat Conside
rations for Permitting and Mitigation + WOTUS Update
DESCRIPTION:[ics_download]\nDirections\nProgram details\nEvaluation of wetl
ands\, streams\, archeology\, and habitat is a necessary component of many
permitting processes and requires a multidisciplinary scientific approach
\, utilizing skill sets from geology to ecology to community outreach. Thi
s presentation will cover wetland delineation methods in commonly encounte
red Midwest settings such as row-cropped land\, different ways to approach
jurisdictional determinations based on wetland and stream scenarios\, arc
heological assessments and situations that can lead to more in-depth arche
ological analysis\, habitat assessment and evaluation\, the relationship o
f these activities to the overall permitting process\, and considerations
for on-site mitigation of wetlands and streams versus compensatory mitigat
ion.\n\nThe definition of “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) has be
en under scrutiny for some time. During the Obama administration\, the EPA
had developed a regulation to better define these waters\, but the rule h
as been under challenge in the courts and by the Trump administration. We
will discuss the current status of the regulation\, why EPA thought it was
necessary\, why it is being challenged\, what might be expected under the
current administration\, and the current impact on wetlands permitting.\n
 \nSpeaker Bio\nLindsay James\, R.G.\, is a Project Manager and licensed pr
ofessional geologist at Blackstone Environmental\, Inc. Lindsay has broad
experience providing environmental consulting services and focuses primari
ly on solid waste\, hydrogeological evaluation\, groundwater compliance\,
and wetland delineation and management services. Lindsay’s technical foc
us has been on groundwater compliance including monitoring and modeling\,
statistical analysis\, hydrogeological site characterization\, and source
evaluation. Lindsay is dedicated to serving the environmental community th
rough outreach and education. She is currently the Chairman of the City of
Overland Park Environmental Advisory Council and serves on the MARC Solid
Waste Grant Review Committee. Lindsay has a bachelor’s and master’s d
egree in Geoscience from the University of Iowa.\n
