Bridging The Gap Business Recycling Program

Over 90% of waste generated in Kansas City is recyclable, and yet our recycling rate is only 34%.  Bridging The Gap (BTG) has been working to change those numbers by helping businesses in the metro look at their waste differently and explore opportunities for waste diversion and recycling.  Cassandra Ford will discuss the standard recycling options for businesses (i.e., plastic, glass, paper, etc.), options for the less common recyclables (i.e., textiles, mattresses, organics, etc.), as well as key program components like education and universal signage.  BTG’s Business Recycling Program is funded by the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.   Ms. Ford will also provide contact information for the Johnson County, Kansas recycling program coordinator.

Cassandra Ford, Bridging the Gap Business Recycling Program Manager

Cassandra has been a life-long “treehugger” and environmental activist and has found her place in BTG. After a plan to go to Alaska and help clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill was thwarted by her parents (she was only 11), Cassandra started focusing her environmental passion closer to home. She spent her formative years starting recycling programs at all of her after-school jobs and was ecstatic to learn you could major in the environment when she looked at colleges. Cassandra has a degree in Environmental Studies and a Masters of Urban Planning – Environmental Land Use from the University of Kansas. She has spent over 15 years in the solid waste management arena, including both public and private sector and is a proponent of local sustainability initiatives. Cassandra enjoys reading, walking with the dog, travel, photography, scuba diving and spending time with her family.
