Using Networks of Local Air Sensors with Air Quality Models:

A wide range of air quality sensor technologies have become available over the past 5-10 years, enabling a revolutionary shift in air pollution monitoring and assessment. Further fueled by increasing number and severity of wildfire smoke events, citizens and communities are turning to air sensors to better understand local air quality. While air sensors can help answer the questions of what is in the air, there still lacks an understanding of why. Ramboll developed the Shair air quality model to help answer the question of why, by combining dense air sensor networks with air quality models to enable source apportionment estimates in real-time. Ramboll will introduce the Shair model and show some results from their pilot project in Richmond, CA in partnership with nonprofit organization Groundwork Richmond.

Julia Luongo, PhD –  Managing Consultant, Ramboll

Dr. Julia Luongo leads Ramboll’s air quality microsensor initiative and is the founder and managing director of Ramboll Shair – an internal corporate startup venture focused on cloud-based air quality modeling. Julia has experience in both indoor and outdoor air quality science, with expertise in sensor-based ambient air quality measurement methods. Her doctoral work investigated the microbiology of indoor air and how HVAC systems affect indoor air quality and infectious disease transmission risk. Specific areas of proficiency include monitoring study design, technology assessments, emission estimation and air pollutant dispersion modeling. Julia has performed indoor air quality assessments and evaluations of ambient air monitoring and sensor technologies. She earned a PhD and MS in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a BS in engineering from Swarthmore College.
