Recreational Cannabis: An Emerging Industry with Complex Environmental Challenges

Cannabis and hemp production is spreading rapidly throughout the country and vertically integrated companies are emerging with broad cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution networks. The industry is a unique mixture of agricultural, industrial, and commercial activities which are accompanied by novel environmental challenges as well, including: odor & air quality management, wastewater handling and disposal, solid waste disposal, and high energy consumption. SCS has been working intensively with the cannabis industry for two years and has several insights to share as the industry proliferates throughout the nation.
