Thomas E. Murphy Memorial Scholarship

The Midwest Section of the Air & Waste Management Association has established a scholarship for graduate students studying in the environmental field in memory of a long-time member, Thomas E. Murphy.

Individuals must be full or part-time graduate students pursuing a course of study and research at the start of the 2012/2013 academic year leading to careers in environment-related studies specifically involving a discipline in environmental management such as, but not limited to: air pollution control, solid waste management, air emissions, renewable fuel research, and other environmental management or research specifically involving air, water and/or waste. The Scholarship is only a one-year award. To qualify for a second year, individuals must reapply.

The Midwest Section will be awarding $2,000 in a scholarship for the 2012/2013 academic year. Submission deadline is July 1st, 2012.

Good morning, and welcome to the Midwest Section of the Air & Waste Management Association's website brought to you from Kansas City.

The International Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) is a non-profit technical, scientific and educational organization with more than 17,000 members in over 65 countries. Founded in 1907 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Association provides a forum where all viewpoints on environmental issues receive consideration.

The Midwest Section of the Air & Waste Management Association is based in Kansas City, Missouri and serves the States of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska with the exception of the metropolitan St. Louis area which is served by the Greater St. Louis Section. The Midwest Section is currently comprised of approximately 400 members and two Chapters: the Iowa Chapter and the new Nebraska Chapter.

Speaker: Bill Bider , KDHE
Topic: FRACKING: Bill will focus on environmental issues surrounding horizontal drilling and fracturing, with an emphasis upon waste management issues. Bill Bider has been the director of the Kansas Bureau of Waste Management since 1993. He is responsible for all state regulatory and outreach programs related to the management of solid and hazardous wastes. Prior to this position, he was the Corporate Manager of Environmental Protection at Trans World Airlines for 8 years.
